Walter Baaden Bishop Montgomery High School Scholarship Established
The Walter Baaden Bishop Montgomery High School Scholarship was established in January 2020 and is named in memory of Walter Baaden, father of seven BMHS graduates (Jan ’76, Terese ’77, Jean ’79, Tom ’80, Steve ’81, Mike ’82, and Kathy ’86). Mr. Baaden passed away on January 1, 2020 and was a proud supporter of Bishop Montgomery and a love of all BMHS athletic teams. The scholarship is awarded to current student-athletes who have a financial need and are in good standing academically. Faculty, Staff & Volunteers
Mary Ann Reis, a 52-year resident of Torrance, Thunder by Knight (TBK) parent, and a 6-year library volunteer with Mr. Martinez, passed away at the age of 87 on Sept. 23, 2020. Her husband, Charles Reis, a TBK Support Club parent, preceded her in death on May 27, 2008. Mary Ann loved volunteering in the library, attending football games, and sewing flags for TBK competitions as part of the TBK Support Club. She is the mom of Rose Reis-Jackson ’88 and Gregory J. Reis ’90.
Dr. Tom Robinson, BMHS’ first baseball coach, passed away on November 1, 2019. He led the Knights to their first league title and first playoff appearance, both in 1960. He went on to serve as Superintendent of Poway Unified School District and Principal of Poway High School. He was 82. He is pictured, at left, with Fr. Clement.
Sr. Celine Marie passed away on December 3, 2019. She taught Religion, English, and French at BMHS from 1962-1967. She also served as English Department Chairperson and Freshman Class Moderator. Sr. Celine Marie moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1972 where she continued her teaching career in Catholic education.
Colleen Welch passed away on February 16, 2020. She taught History and Government at BMHS from 1976-1982 and also served as History Department Chairperson. She is the mother of Amy Welch-Meyer ’79 and grandmother of Amanda Meyer ’09, Emily Meyer ’11, and Mitchell Meyer ’15. Mrs. Welch also served the United States during World War II.
In July 2020, former boys’ basketball coach Dave Benaderet passed away. Benaderet served as the boys’ coach from 1965-1968 and led the Knights to the program’s first CIF-SS title in 1967-68. His championship team finished 29-4 and was inducted into the BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. He went on the serve as the head coach at his alma mater, Loyola Marymount University. He was 85.
